The E-Class Mercedes - A class of it's own?

The E-Class Mercedes - A class of it's own?

Recently I was invited to attend the launch of the E-Class Mercedes in Cape Town. Expecting the launch to be spectacular, what else could I expect from Mercedes, I came prepared.

But nothing could prepare me for the excitement and the thrill of racing, skidding and slaloming at full speed around the private airport in Stellenbosch.

The thirty journalists from across the country were given a wide range of the recently launched "Mercs" to put to the test. We were encouraged to put our foot down and see just how safe and flexible this new addition to the Mercedes fleet really is.

The experts call this new E-Class Merc the safest car on the road and with its new level of safety features it very well may be. What started with the PRE-SAFE system some ten years ago, and continued with DISTRONIC PLUS, has resulted in a new dimension of motoring. Mercedes-Benz refers to this as "intelligent drive". Optionally, the E-Class features a whole host of new or optimised systems on board, which help to make motoring more comfortable and safer.

All E-Class models are fitted standard with COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, a radar-based collision warning system with brake assist systems. It helps to significantly reduce the risk of a rear-end collision. Also forming part of the standard equipment is ATTENTION ASSIST, which is now able to warn the driver of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range, and also inform the driver about his level of fatigue and the amount of driving time, which has elapsed since the last break. It also offers an adjustable sensitivity level.

Come on test drive one, but I would advise you to keep your foot securely on the "exhilarator pedal" as the speed might consume all your previous inhibitions, test drive one at your own peril.
