Crawford's Rice Babies

Crawford's Rice Babies

Date: 2016-05-27
The Grade 10 students of Crawford College North Coast have been learning about life roles and teenage pregnancy in Life Orientation this term.

In order for the students to get a feel for what it is like to be a teenage parent, the Life Orientation Department decided to run an experiment for the duration of one week where the students had to carry a 5kg "Rice Baby" around with them 24/7! The aim of this experiment was for students to see what level of responsibility a baby requires as well to see how difficult it could be to juggle the roles of student and parent at the same time. Students had to maintain a journal for the week, documenting their experiences and reflecting on their daily struggles. The experiment was a huge success as many of the students reported through their journals that they learnt responsibility during this time and that it also made them realise the importance of abstinence.

Once the marking of the Rice Babies and journals is complete, the rice and clothing will be donated to various charities.
