The peal of the Indian Ocean, Mauritiushas inspired the chic, comfortable flowing dresses in their colour, texture, design, and pattern.

TheShowstopper, an opulent 1008 piece, draped as a regal gown of fabrics fromevery corner of Africa. The garment and Model represented Great Mother Africa. The source of all existence, abundance, life, death, pain and joy. Theembodiment of Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. From Her bleeding body comespower, resilience, compassion, and deep love. She is whole and enjoys Hercreation via our experiences of Her.

KhanyaDesigns is a pioneering slow fashion range founded by Verushka Pather, awell-known Classical Bharata Natyam Dancer from Durban. Her design company isdedicated to preserving ancestral heritage through clothing. With a commitmentto sustainable practices, cultural fusion, and community empowerment. KhanyaDesigns is reshaping the fashion landscape by telling stories through everyweave.

Themost poignant of all is, The Ancestral Collection. This magnanimous creationmarks the power of storytelling through clothing, the harmonious amalgamationof heritage, and the forging of new narratives for the future. Ancestral imageswere sourced from the archives of Aapravasi Ghat dating back to the early 1800sand our 1860 Heritage Foundation. A soulful Artist Mr Sanjiven from GuruartsMauritius has shared his personal captures of elders from the Port Louismarketplace. The vibrant cultures of Indentured Countries on the AfricanContinent are a historical confluence, flowing from our past to present andfuture. "This historical union arrivesin the exotic, contemporary Kaftan, complemented by a flowing silhouette, gracefully enveloping the wearer's body." Said Verushka, "Not an ordinary Kaftanfrom Turkey, Persia, India, or Africa. But Souls of our ancestral historypermeates our media today, sharing Their hopes, dreams, pain, and sorrow. Wehonour our Ancestors, their lives, resilience and dedication to provide abetter life for us."

TheIndian diaspora is an international phenomenon, with a presence in more than100 countries globally. The different histories of this very diverse Indiandiaspora started their international journey with the greatest migration inhistory. And almost 200 years of personal experience in social and culturalchange, political development and ethnicity and advancement in hybrid cultures.

Khanyaembraces and showcases the ancestral heritage that forms the foundation of bothMauritius and South Africa. By weaving together, cultural motifs, colours, andcraftsmanship passed down through generations. The slow fashion range becomes aliving tapestry of shared history.

TheRise of the Diaspora is the powerful voices of children and grandchildren bornfrom Indenture who have remained true to their ancestral heritage, keepingtheir forefather's traditions alive. By travelling the world and dancing onholy grounds, opulent stages and telling tales of 5000 years ago. Pastimes ofVrindavan, Lord Shiva's majestic Tandava in Chidambaram, and the trials of afamily in Ayodhya. Why not tell the tales of our living Gods, our ancestors of185-200 years ago. Authors, Musicians, Playwrights, Movie Directors, andHistorians have all captured the essence of Their lives. As a dancer anddesigner, Verushka Pather has now translated these understandings andappreciation of their lives onto fabrics and garments.

Celebratingthe past with honour, in meticulously crafted garments, each piece becomes avessel of memory and tradition. The collection encapsulates the essence of thepast, reimagined for the contemporary world. It is a celebration of theresilience and diversity of the people who shaped the cultural landscapes ofthese two nations. Khanya Designs is crossing boundaries and translatingdiaspora understandings into the fluidity of movement and real-life indenturedexperiences on canvas and cloth.

KhanyaDesigns are deeply grateful to Mr Satyendra Peerthum respected Historian andCurator of Aapravasi Ghat the highly committed, Mr Selvan Naidoo Historian,Curator and Director of 1860 Heritage Centre and Artist Sanjiven Guruarts fromGuruarts - Uncommon Inspirations for sharing their personal creations andresearch, has brought the Ancestral Collection alive.
