You don't have to be an Arnold Schwarzenegger to be a hero

You don't have to be an Arnold Schwarzenegger to be a hero

Date: 2017-06-23

Only when it really counts, do the true colours of the human spirit surface and become clear to see. Never was this more evident than when our Ballito community raised their generosity to new levels for those fire ravaged citizens and furbabies in the beautiful hamlet village of Knysna.

From wealthy business owners to single mothers dipping into their monthly allowance, the campaign to provide essential help and provisions was met with robust vigour and genuine sentiment. Rather than thank each by name, you know who you are, let us give special mention to those heroic Firefighters who mostly took unpaid leave and ventured from as far as Mpumalanga and Limpopo, leaving family at home for the week that the fire raged out of control. With limited equipment and scarcity of water, this TEAM of fearless warriors, leapt into the cauldron of flames, saving lives while giving little regard for their own. From those that witnessed this miraculous effort, this was a highly charged emotional and spiritual experience, with a sense of comradery limited to such extreme conditions. We should never forget this selfless 'charge of the life brigade'.

Amongst this multitude of heroes, were our own local heroes, Brett Michelin, Johan Muller, Dean Fletcher, Carl Meyer and Louis Kotze, who also ventured to Knysna to serve the now famous, Mozambique Fireman's Boerie Roll. With the heat up, some of the fire fighters hadn't eaten or slept in 24 hours, and still they were up for the call. It is not surprizing that Brett reports that he was in tears for 5 straight days as he dealt with every emotion imaginable. We are forever grateful.

Our local community through the efforts of Mozambique Restaurant and many associates, raised in excess of R180000 for the Knysna fund raising campaign. Last week Mozambique Restaurant hosted a Grand evening of music, laughs and auctions, where R40000 was raised in one evening.

Way to go Dolphin Coast, you really can and have made a difference to so many lives. The journey has just begun.
