Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce: Beautiful Liar
Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce: Beautiful Liar
Date: 2026-05-29
Alfa Romeo has always sold you a feeling first and the fine print second. The Junior Veloce is no different, and after a week behind its wheel, my adrenal glands have filed a formal complaint.
Let us get the uncomfortable truth out of the way early. The Veloce carries a 54 kWh battery and my Alfa claimed a range of 350 kilometres on a full charge. That number evaporated faster than my composure when I took to the first open stretch of road. Drive it the way it demands to be driven, and 250 kilometres is a more honest expectation. Drive it the way I drove it, and you will be watching that range indicator with the nervous attention of a man checking his bank balance on payday. This is emphatically not a long distance car. Plan accordingly.
Now. The good part. 208 kilowatts, 345 Newton metres, a Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential at the front axle, lowered suspension, upgraded brakes and steering tuned for a car that actually loves to corner. Zero to 100 kilometres per hour in 5.9 seconds. That figure is clinical. The experience is anything but. The Junior Veloce pulls with an immediacy that rearranges your internal organs and grins while doing it. It communicates through the steering, it rewards aggression, it feels, against all modern electric convention, genuinely alive.
Alfa Romeo has built something with real soul here, wrapped in bodywork that stops people in parking lots. Just do not ask it to get you to Johannesburg without a conversation about charging stops.
