See the Big Five by bike at iMfolozi

Date: 2016-07-29
As an entrant of the Old Mutual Wild Series iMfolozi Challenge, you get an exclusive all-access pass to Big Five country, without being watched by too many rangers or being forced to ride in a group.

Riders will have a unique opportunity to ride in a part of the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park that is not normally open to the public. Famed for its history as a former royal hunting ground of King Shaka, its Big Five animals and immense flora and fauna diversity, the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is best seen by bike.

"It's the only true Big Five game reserve ride in South Africa where riders don't have to ride in groups protected by an armed ranger," says race director Stuart Berry."In addition, the event takes riders on trails that move through the proclaimed wilderness area of Africa's oldest game reserve, an experience that cannot be had at any other time of the year or in any other park."

One man who knows all about the iMfolozi Challenge is regular entrant, Rusty Barnes. The KwaZulu-Natal local participated in the first five "Challenges" before taking a break. He's back this year, though, to experience the unique pleasures of the ride as well as to support a cause that is close to his heart.

"I come from a wild life background," says Barnes, "my dad was involved with the old 'Natal Parks Board', so when the iMfolozi Challenge started it just seemed like a natural event to enter. I did the first one, then a few more then stopped for a few years, but I'm glad to say I am back for 2016!"

With the iMfolozi Challenge and all other Wild Series events, your entry fee is the donation. Wildlands uses your entry fee to contribute towards their ongoing conservation efforts. But the event organisers also know how to put on a good show.

"This is not a race," says Barnes. "It's a ride, an opportunity to do something that very few people on earth can do, a chance to appreciate nature up close and to see the importance of conservation first hand. Just two words of advice; enjoy it!"
