Farm Workers

Farm Workers

Date: 2018-10-12

Mzansi Arts Development Ensemble presents a free one-off staging of a topical production entitled Farm Workers, a new drama production that puts a human face to the legacy ofthe unfavourable working environment of farm workers, coming to the to the Playhouse Loft Theatre on 13 October 2018 at 10h00.

Farm Workers addresses issues of suffering and ill treatment of farm workers and examines their unfavourable working environment. "The main aim of the production is to promote peaceful transformation of conflict among communities through dialogue, debate, negotiations, mediation and theatre. Through this stage production, we wish to bridge communication gaps that exist between farm owners, farm workers and government." says producer, Lerato Bellinda Molemong of Mzansi Arts Development Ensemble.

Farm Workers is conceived, written and directed by Lucky Cele: "It is an original piece new inspired by the newspaper headlines and the many articles relating to the focus on farms at the moment. I am hoping that by making the suffering and inequality into personal stories, we can expose realities and thereby encourage positive change,"

The cast is made up of four development artists from KwaMashu and uMlazi gleaned from MADE's arts learnership programme; working alongside four professional actors so they can learn from each others' experiences during the process. They have been rehearsing at the YMCA in KwaMashu. The cast comprises: Andile Msomi (professional); Cebolenkosi Mthembu (development); Thapelo Nzimande (development); Vuyo Sishuba (professional); Ayanda Gumede (development); Thandanani Qwabe (professional - from uZalo and Imbewu).

Established in 2005, Mzansi Arts Development (MADE) is a non profit community-driven organisation inspired by the lack of skills, slow growth and recognition of the SA arts industry. MADE promotes arts and culture as a source of personal fulfilment and carves a potential career path for students and interns in a myriad art forms - performing and visual arts - affirming their skills through an integrated academic training and development programme.

This production will be staged at the Playhouse Loft Theatre on 13 October 2018 at 10h00. Entry is free and all are welcome to this multi-lingual production. Due to the content of the production, no under 16s allowed.
