SUZUKI ACROSS - CAPE TOWN ROLLED OUT THE RED CARPET First Drive Impression

SUZUKI ACROSS - CAPE TOWN ROLLED OUT THE RED CARPET First Drive Impression

Author: by Kasia Yoko

Cape Town behaved itself impeccably. No howling southeaster, no grey skies, not a breath of wind nor a hint of swell. Just crisp mountain air, perfect visibility and a brand new Suzuki Across waiting in the car park looking rather pleased with itself. Honestly, you would think the Mother City had been on the phone to Suzuki's PR department.

And what a setting to meet what is unquestionably Suzuki's boldest move yet. The Across arrives as the Japanese brand's most advanced SUV to date, combining genuinely dashing good looks with cutting-edge technology, impressive safety credentials and a family-friendly practicality that never once feels like a compromise.

We pointed the Across along Ou Kaap Se Weg, one of those gloriously winding coastal routes that reveals a car's true character within the first few bends. The Across passed with flying colours. The ride is composed and confident, the steering pleasantly weighted and the cabin - oh, the cabin. The GLX that we drove wraps you in synthetic leather with copper stitching, massages you with ventilated front seats, dazzles you with 64-colour ambient lighting and serenades you through an eight-speaker Harman Infinity sound system. A heads-up display, 360-degree camera and panoramic sunroof complete what feels like a genuinely executive experience at a price that will raise eyebrows in the best possible way - starting from only R349900.

The 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine sips a claimed 5.3 L/100 km while producing a willing 76 kW and 137 Nm, backed by a five-year/200 000 km warranty and a four-year/60 000 km service plan.

From the harbour, we were bundled into a helicopter and treated to a breath taking bird's eye view of one of the world's most spectacular cities. Below us, Cape Town sparkled. Down there somewhere, the Across was already making friends.
