Food for Life in Umhlanga

Food for Life in Umhlanga

Date: 2017-10-06

Last Saturday members of the Food For Life Durban South team, Super Spar Umhlanga Rocks together with celebrity and humanitarian, Sorisha Naidoo sacrificed their Saturday to create awareness and collect groceries and funds from the patrons that visited the Super Spar in Umhlanga Rocks.

This was the first time that this initiative had been carried out at the store and proved to be a huge success.

"We are overwhelmed by the support of the Umhlanga community." Sorisha Told The Bugle. "I am humbled by Food for Life and what they do and that is why I am here today assisting the devotees, it is astounding to think that one 10kg bag of rice feeds over 300 children."

Food for Life South Africa is an NGO and a Section 18a company engaged in creating hunger free zones across South Africa having recognised that 2.4 million people are food insecure in this country. Thus far, 21 active branches comprising of about 200 volunteers feed approximately 10 000 plates of warmly prepared vegetarian meals daily.

This organisation aims at reaching out to the hungry from disadvantaged rural communities, the unemployed, schools, hospitals, clinics, old age homes, orphanages and various other shelters.

The organization is funded, largely, by generous public donations.

"We know it would be impossible to eradicate poverty but together we can fight "HUNGER". This year, our objective is to reach out to as many schools as possible. In order to achieve this, we need your help." Said Sandhya Munnoo.

"We are currently feeding up to 5000 plates of food a day throughout the KZN region. Unfortunately this is not enough. After visiting many schools in the Durban area we are still amazed to find learners attending school on an empty stomach." Sandhya continued.

"Late Madiba described the kids of South Africa to be the future leaders of this land and that education was the key to ensuring a better life for all. We at Food For Life have taken this statement to heart and would like to alleviate the aspect of nutrition, thus enabling these learners to concentrate on their studies and thus take up the challenge to better themselves. " said Sandhya.

For many students, this is the only hot meal that they receive for the day and in some instances for the week.

"There are many similar deserving schools that require our assistance but due to lack of resources, we are not able to accommodate all of them. On behalf of Food For Life Durban South, Sorisha Naidoo and SuperSpar Umhlanga Rocks we would like to express our gratitude to all those kind patrons that supported our course." Concluded Sandhya Munnoo.
