KZN Drought Reaching Critical Point

KZN Drought Reaching Critical Point

Date: 2015-12-04
As the North Coast struggles with the worst drought in decades, Semcorp Siza Water held a Drought Update Meeting at their offices in Ballito to discuss and update the public about the progress it was making in providing the community with water and keeping our taps running.

Concerned parties gathered to hear Shyam Misra, managing director of Sembcorp Siza Water, outline the plan for the holidays in informing the general public as well as the holiday makers about the water shortages.

The good news is that the North Coast is achieving the 40% water saving target; the bad news is that this saving might not be enough to keep the taps running in the Festive Season, with the influx of visitors to our region.

Mr Misra also presented the top 20 water Consumers and their achieved water consumption savings. Most were shown to make a substantial savings, while others, it seems, were still lagging behind. Mr Misra assured the public that the businesses that do not adhere to their consumption targets will be fined and their taps will be turned off.

"Experts state that the present weather conditions are the effects of El Ninio which is currently predicted to continue until August 2016." Mr Misra said. "Results indicate this to be the worst drought in history and is regarded as a 1 in 200 year drought."

He assured the public that augmentation via boreholes is progressing well. Around 500 000 litres of water is supplied by boreholes per day, "We intend on commissioning additional boreholes by mid December, which will increase alternate supply to approximately 700 000 litres per day."

"We are completing optimisation testing of the recycled plant with final network modifications being made. The recycle plant can produce approximately 4 million litres per day, we will be introducing recycled water into our networks from December 2015." Concluded Misra.
