It was a balmy Sunday morning when we arrived at The Surf Riders Café‚ at Addington Beach, it was threatening to rain yet every table was occupied inside and out, as the breakfast crowd was finishing their last avocado toast, we decided to go to the beach and throw a ball for our 18 month old Africanis puppy, Lupa who was to experience her very first restaurant visit.
We have heard so much about this almost hidden venue and have known the manageress Sam for many years. In the days when Café‚ 1999 was on top of our lunch menu and Sam was there to indulge us with heavenly wines and delectable feasts.
Not much has changed, Sam is still serving delicious food and outstanding wines but now in a more relaxed and spectacular setting, right on the beach next to the surf school. Families with their pets frequent this place where there is ample comfortable seating options and even a vegan doggie menu.
Talking about vegan; while The Surf Riders Café‚ is a meat lovers paradise, it is surprisingly vegetarian and vegan friendly. A special menu is designed around individual dietary needs not just for the four legged customers but also for the masses. Everything is made from scratch, there is so much flavour in each component and Samantha tells me that she hates cutting corners; authentic and wholesome food is her personal motto, everything is locally sourced and freshly prepared to order.
Burgers are big at Surf Riders Café‚ and they are proud to serve 100% free range, hormone free, grass-fed beef, that is traditionally reared in the Underberg Valley. You have an endless choice of burger styles, served with their signature crispy potato or sweet potato chips.
All pizzas are prepared in their wood-fired oven with generous gourmet toppings and a homemade tomato base. Prices start from R65, but you can also create your own pizzas if nothing tickles your fancy.
The food at Surf Riders Café is about natural, flavourful ingredients, supporting local produce and, as the seasons would have it, this changes all year around.
Surf Riders Café‚ is situated in Erskine Terrace, South Beach, Golden Mile, Durban, come along anytime for breakfast, brunch or lunch and bring your fur baby along for a memorable day on the beach.
