Ribeiro & McDougall Clinch Titles at Jordy Smith Cape Town Surf Pro
Alex Ribeiro (BRA) and Zoe McDougall (HAW) clinched back-to-back titles in South Africa when they won the men s and women s events at the Jordy Smith Cape Town Surf Pro pres. by O Neill in front of a packed beachfront at Melkbosstrand in Cape Town on Sunday.
Joshe Faulkner (Jeffreys Bay) was the only South African winner at the event, successfully defending the junior men s crown he won last year, while Sophia Fulton (AUS) grabbed her second victory in the past three weeks by dominating the junior women's final
Ribeiro added this week s World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 win to his victory in the QS3,000 Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing in Durban last weekend, which sees the former Championship Tour (CT) surfer jump three places to No. 2 on the QS rankings.
Another surfer that was in Cape Town recently was local North Coast surfing lady legend Tammy-Lee Smith. The Bugle spoke to Tammy about her surf career and plans for the future.
I started surfing when I was 14years old and competed in the WQS for about 5 years. Tammy spoke fondly of those early years. I quit to study Environmental Management and I now work at a recycling company doing Environmental compliance. I have always wanted to chase bigger waves and since moving back to South Africa I made it my goal to do so.
Tammy had just returned from Cape Town where she was hunting huge swells at Dungeons, I have to juggle it with work but I have been chasing every swell I can get. I got lucky enough to get onto the alternate list for the Jaws event run by WSL. I really hope to get an invite this year, that s why I am pushing at the moment to ride every swell I can. I have to travel to Cape Town for the swells because that s where all the big wave spots are.
