SVET(Shree Veeraboga Emperumal Temple in Gandhi's Hill, Tongaat) in associationwith the oThongathi Museum Committee held its 1860 Commemoration Event at theSVET Heritage Garden. The Peace Torch was lit by community elders, thereafter, candles were lit by all guests.
Theevening's programme comprised speeches on indenture by various community elders and Councillors.
Thehighlight of the function was the talk given by the dynamic ChoonilalVallabhjhee. Mr Vallabhjee, despite being in his 90's enthralled the guestswith his wisdom.
TwoAyahs, descendants of Indentured Indians, Allumala -100 years old andSubabakiamma Govender - 90 years old, were also honoured at this event.
Priorto this event, Tongaat was graced by a visit from Consul General of India, DrThelma John David. As Tongaat is sugar country, Dr David experienced some ofthe sites that were the beginnings of indenture.
TongaatHulett management took Dr David on a tour around the Maidstone Sugar Mill. DrDavid was also hosted at Voermol Feeds where the Elsenberg bell tower - theringing of the bell summoned the workers to their place of employment - wasviewed.
In2017, Voermol Feeds honoured the pioneers with an inscribed plaque on the belltower. The last visit for the day was the Inyaninga Memorial Garden situatednear the King Shaka Airport. Many Indentured Indians were buried at thissite.
