The YoungHeroes programme has tested various implementation models in order to assist public primary schools with offering weekly Physical Education (PE) lessons and introducing school sport. The programme has been successfully implemented in six provinces in partnership with Sportstech Foundation and the National Department of Education.
This recognition comes at a crucial time for education in South Africa as physical education is incorporated into the curriculum by the Department of Education. The RedCap YoungHeroes Programme has been identified as a national benchmark as it not only empowers schools to teach physical education but also encourages young people to participate through intra and inter school sports festivals. This award recognises the programme's achievements under the category of "partnerships that support health, wellbeing and learning in Africa."
Natasja Ambrosio, manager of the RedCap Foundation, said that the conference had proved an extremely important and inspiring coming together of both local and international delegates from education, civil society and business. They engaged around strategies to create innovative, sustainable and effective partnerships that would see business and education working together to improve education. "The success of the YoungHeroes project is an example of how effective partnerships can create a win-win situation for all" Ambrosio commented.
The RedCap Foundation has been in existence since 2005 and impacted on the lives of many children and youth through programmes addressing the need for quality education in public schools and assisting unemployed youth with on-the-job training at Mr Price stores. This programme assists many unemployed young people in accessing jobs both at Mr Price and other South African businesses," Ambrosio said.
Site visits to a variety of successful and innovative partnerships in the broader Durban area were an integral part of the conference, providing delegates with firsthand experience of various programmes. The RedCap Foundation hosted two tours to KwaDukuza - one to RedCap Schools demonstrating a quality education programme at St Christopher Primary School and the other to demonstrate the YoungHeroes programme at Dr. Vilakazi Primary, where learners and teachers showed delegates what they have learnt by implementing PE lessons for the past two years.
