NSRI Barrel Race
Sailors young and old are being encouraged to come down and support the event in the hopes of raising money for the hardworking Durban National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Station 5.
Commodore for the Point Yacht Club, Craig Millar stated, "We are forever grateful to the incredible team that are always there for us in time of need. Considering the incredibly tough coastline on which we sail and race, it is always a relief knowing that the guys from NSRI are a call away."
Continuing, Millar said, "Back home, the guys at Station 5 work tirelessly, volunteering their services. Like any organisation, it requires funding and the Durban's yachting community use events like this one to give back and support."
The Fundraising event will start with a morning on the water sailing on the bay, where the NSRI will be out in force and may even 'high jack' a few crewmembers and hold them up for randsom. After the sailing, the day moves onto the PYC lawns for some live entertainment. During the land-based activities, there will be some fantastic giveaways.
Organiser for the event, Tracy Bowman said, "The day is dedicated to raising funds for the Durban NSRI base, who are desperately trying to purchase a new, more powerful rescue boat - for our safety. We managed to raise R30,000 at the recent Band on the Sand, organised by Wayne Smith. All of these funds will be handed over to the NSRI at the conclusion of our fundraising drive. After this we have a wine-tasting evening, which will also be used to raise money."
Anyone wanting to get involved is invited to get in touch with the Point Yacht Club.
The proactive yachting community are coming together with the intentions of raising funds for the NSRI Rescue 5 with a fundraising event held on Sunday 24 July at the Point Yacht Club.
