Our Community Unites for Mandela Day

Our Community Unites for Mandela Day

Date: 2018-07-27

Last Wednesday, SAPS Umhlali hosted an Open Day to commemorate Mandela Day. Captain Vinny Pillay from Umhlali SAPS invited the community to visit the newly opened Trauma Unit.

A group of about fifty community members gathered at Umhlali Police Station to take part in Captain Pillay's Mandela day initiative. After a quick visit to the colourful Trauma Units, the group proceeded in convoy to Zwelebantu Orphanage, where 40 disabled and abandoned children ranging in ages from 3-21 reside.

"We decided to support this organisation as these kids are destitute, disabled and abandoned." Captain Vinny told The Bugle, "We wanted to bring happiness, joy and hope to these children on this very special day."

Over the past few years and under Captain Vinny's leadership Umhlali Police Station has been vital in contributing to the welfare of the local community, "Food, clothing and toys are collected from the community and businesses and distributed to the underprivileged communitieson a monthly basis." says Captain Pillay.

"I am also working with the local businesses to highlight the plight of the underprivileged in order to assist them. I engage in regular school talks educating the youthon the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol, and on general safety."

"People can help us by donating clothing, food items and toys to assist the community. They can also join in the outreach programmes carried out." Said Captain Pillay, "Umhlali SAP, Chakasrock Chalets Management and team, La Montagne Management (both from First Group), Nestlife Durban and local community members, church organisations and NPOS were all instrumental in making this day such a success."Concluded Captain Pillay.

Johan Mey Regional Operations Manager, First Group, said that the ethos of his company was to invest back into the community that they are located in.

"We are proud to say that we have two main beneficiaries and they are Crystal House and Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust, which we financially support annually." Said Johan Mey.

"All of our properties, as part of our Social Responsibility, are committed to have two external events and two events at the property to give back to the community. This is not only financial support but personal time investment."

"One of our principles is to employ at least 80% from the area where our Resorts are. This way we train, mentor and develop the skills of the community, as the late President Nelson Mandela wanted to grow and develop the country. We are passionate and committed to make this country great together while treating all with respect." Concluded Johan Mey.

It was humbling to see how little it takes to light up the lives of these abandoned and seriously handicapped children. Thank you Captain Pillay for organizing an event that made a difference.
