KwaZulu-Natal Mini Libraries Project

KwaZulu-Natal Mini Libraries Project

Date: 2016-03-11
Seven mini libraries for the blind have been established in various parts of the province during the current financial year. The service points were created in six public libraries namely Creighton, KwaDukuza, eZakheni, Margate, Mpophomeni and Newcastle as well as on a mobile museum to make information and reading material more accessible to the blind and visually impaired.

Seven other mini libraries were set up in Pinetown, KwaMakhuta, Bessie Head, UMzimkhulu, Ulundi, Jozini and Esikhaleni during the 2012/2013 financial year. A number of library staff have also been trained on how to serve people living with disabilities, with a specific focus on the blind and visually impaired.

The 'blind people love reading' project is a partnership between the KZN Arts and Culture Department and South African Library for the Blind. It supports the ideas expressed in the South African Constitution, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and TheLibraryandInformationServices TransformationCharter.

Each of mini libraries has been equipped with document readers, headsets, computers with zoom text and Jaws screen reader software as well as daisy tape recorders. The information has been collected and converted by tertiary students assisting the programme.

The selected libraries were identified by the KZN Arts and Culture Department in consultation with local municipalities and organizations for people with disabilities.
