Rotary Club of Durban

Rotary Club of Durban

Date: 2014-05-09
North The Rotary Club of Durban North recently handed over a stove and a fridge to the Imbaliyethu Crche in Inanda. The electric stove could not have come sooner as their original gas stove had been deemed a health hazard. Imbaliyethu, which means "Our Flower", was started in 1995 at the back of Nomusa Shabanga's house. In 2009 Ms Shabanga was fortunate to receive a house through Operation JumpStart from which she now operates the crche in the Glebe area of Inanda.

The crche takes care of 170 children ranging between 3 months and 5 years old. They presently have a total of 9 permanent and temporary teachers with only the Grade R teacher being paid by the Education Department. The school receives no other funds from either the government or the private sector. With so many of the children coming from poverty - stricken homes, the school fees charged per child to finance the running of the school is often out of reach for a lot of the parents. The average income received from parents therefore amounts to just R30 per child per month. No child is ever turned away though. Teachers frequently work for little or no pay as feeding the children is given the highest priority with whatever funds are available.

Over the years the Rotary Club of Durban North has built 7 toilets for the children, installed a 5000 liter water tank and erected a fence around the property to ensure the safety of the children. The club regularly drops off food parcels as well as clothing and any other items that could assist the school and its young learners.

The Imbaliyethu School is just one of the many projects that the Rotary Club of Durban North supports which require on-going fundraising initiatives. The next fundraiser is their annual Golf Day at Beachwood Golf Course on 16 May. Please contact coutts@mweb.co.za for all the details or join The Rotary Club of Durban North Facebook Page.
