The Blackphone

The Blackphone

We live in a time where privacy is something that isn't so easy to acquire. Recent events have shown that anonymity and security on the Internet is no longer something which can be easily attained. And with that in mind Blackphone was created.

It looks like a fairly standard Android phone. It has a 4.7-inch HD (the exact resolution has yet to be announced) IPS display, a 2GHz quad-core processor, 16GB of storage, an 8-megapixel camera, LTEÑpretty much everything you'd want in a smartphone. The phone is available for pre-order today for $649 and it ships in June 2014.

A Product of Silent Circle, a company with an existing portfolio of security- and encryption-related software. The device will protect the user from day-to-day security threats, which smartphone users face on the Internet and through cellular communication.

Security on Blackphone comes from two places: the custom-built PrivateOS, built on Android, and a collection of third-party security services. And while you might have thought $649 to be perhaps a tad expensive, it is important to keep in mind that the phone does come with a host of great services, which is where the value comes from.

Bundled with every phone purchase comes two years of Silent Circle (valued at $240), three one-year "Friends and Family" subscriptions, two years of the Disconnect VPN service (valued at $120), and two years of Spideroak online storage (valued at $120). These services will allow you to minimise the risk of getting your data stolen from your smartphone and will also help prevent the possibility of people hacking into your phone.

The Blackphone serves a new purpose in today's society, but if you are not so worried about the security on your phone then this is not the phone for you, if you do however conduct business, which may require such measures, then look no further.
