LTE - We Give You The Breakdown

LTE (Long Term Evolution), known and marketed as4G LTE, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. This technology allows users to access the Internet at significantly higher speeds than past generations of GSM technology.

This being said, 4G is a great thing, and it will no doubt increase the efficiency of South Africans and the ability of our smartphones to be functional in the modern world. LTE has been around since 2009 when it was introduced in Oslo, Norway. It is no surprise that South Africa is playing catch-up with technological advancements, I'm sure we're all too familiar with this phenomenon.

Today, we find ourselves becoming more reliant on the Internet and its services. From countless hours spent on Youtube, or just social networking until you get abducted, people are becoming acquainted with technology at an almost exponential rate.

With commercial LTE networks becoming operational, a race is being staged as networks battle it out for complete coverage of South Africa. LTE is currently available to only a select few areas, mostly major CBDs around South Africa.

Recently the South Korean company LG reportedly sold its 10 millionth 4G smartphone, which bodes well for future manufacturers. Both the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S series devices are 4G-enabled, which would allow users of these devices to connect at up to 60MBper second on Vodacom's LTE service.

Speed has always been a selling point for cell phones, and with the current market so saturated with hardware speed and software smoothness, another battle is taking place with the service providers as progress with wireless technology speeds up.
