KZN Philharmonic Orchestra Zululand tour
They will be performing In Concert, In Zululand - a picnic style concert at Grantleigh Christian School, Mposa on Thursday 14 April at 6.30pm, and at the Ghost Mountain Inn, Mkuze on Friday 15 April at 7pm. Both concerts will be under the baton of Daniel Walshaw, and the soloists for both concerts are Do Mfayela (soprano) and Wayne Mkhize (tenor).
The programme for their public concerts includes some orchestral favourites from Rossini's Barber of Seville; Mozart's Marriage of Figaro; Bizet's Carmen Suite; Verdi's Rigoletto and La Traviata; Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story and Rogers/Russell Bennett's The Sound of Music.
Outside of the World Symphonies Seasons and the high-profile public concerts, the KZN Phil has an extensive and geographically far-reaching programme of taking the orchestra to schools, community venues, old age homes and outlying areas across the province to introduce the broader public to orchestral music. Their particular focus is primary and high school learners to the concept of music appreciation. A series of thoughtfully-scripted programmes introduce children to the power of music and allow learners to better understand the complexities, benefits, prowess and accessibility of an orchestra.
During their stay in Zululand the orchestra will perform at the Esikhawini Umfolozi TVET College (two performances); Empangeni community concert at Mpangeni high school; Richards Bay at John Ross College (two performances); and Grantleigh School. At Ghost Mountain in they will be doing a day-time education and development concert and the evening public concert on Friday 15.
The educational repertoire covers music from familiar themes such as James Bond, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter, to our the National Anthem, a range of recognisable motifs from the orchestra's classical collection ... to Pharrell William's clap-along ditty, Happy.
