Living Dead Girl
Living Dead Girl
The production also champions attempts by feminist activist groups to challenge the institutions who attempt to discipline the female body. Written as a collection of monologues, poetry and short satirical sketches, Living Dead Girl explores the use of new media technologies, activism and documentary theatre as mechanisms to exploit, subvert and critique patriarchal systems of governance.
With no explicit location, the 32 characters (played by 17 performers) in Living Dead Girl represent the stories and experiences of uncountable women as anonymous ghosts punished for defying the status quo and for belonging to patriarchal structures which devalue them.
Featuring first, second and third year students from the Department of Drama Studies, DUT, Living Dead Girl is an act of rebellion creating a platform for the presence of personal stories to create empowerment.
Written and directed by Junior Lecturer and MA student Marcia Peschke, musical accompaniment and arrangement by 3rd year student Dumisani Mkhize, Living Dead Girl features music by alternative artists Amanda Palmer and Antony and the Johnsons, VNV Nation, Blue October, Rammstein, music from the Dr Horrible internet musical and the movie The Fifth Element.
Living Dead Girl is more than a passive theatre-going experience - there will be an exhibition room alongside the Courtyard featuring elements of the exhibition created by Diakonia Council of Churches for the 16 Days of Activism installation last year, entitled Garden of Hope and Healing.
Following the end of each performance, the cast will engage in talk-back sessions with the audience to explore how they have perceived the experiences on stage, the reality of violence against women, and the audience as participants in transformation.
The play opens on 16 March and runs till 21 March 2013 at the Courtyard Theatre, Department of Drama and Production Studies, DUT. Tickets cost R35. For more information or to book tickets please contact departmental secretary Lebohang Sibisi on 031 373 2194.
