The brother moves on

The brother moves on

Date: 2016-07-01
In association with Concerts SA and South African Breweries, The Rainbow brings you The Brother Moves On- with special guest performances from Zoe Molelekwa, Madala Kunene, Mabi Thobejane, Mdu Magwaza and Matthias Abaecherli.

This special performance by The Brother Moves On at The Rainbow is part of the Concerts SA Venue Circuit which aims to foster a love and support for live music in our communities, as well as anchor small and medium sized venues in urban and rural Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape.

The Brother Moves On first performed at the Rainbow on a double bill with The Muffinz at our birthday bash in December 2015 and so impressed us that when they requested a performance before setting out on their first month-long European tour, we had no hesitation in saying yes.

Prompted by this development, pianist Zoe Molelekwa, son of the late and much missed Moses Molelekwa has now asked to be a part of the afternoon. Kunene and Molelekwa senior were part of the groundbreaking M.E.L.T. 2000 record label in the 1990's.

"I am amazed at how this afternoon is evolving into this generational conversation. In fact it gives me goosebumps. Right now I am deep in the trenches trying to realize a dream of taking the music of the Rainbow Restaurant to the Edinburgh International Festival in August 2017 and 2018. The basic concept of that project is that the six headline artists being proposed for the 2017 program are artists that performed at the Rainbow pre-1994. Kunene, with his latest album, 1959 is being mooted as the opening act of our run in Edinburgh next year. For the 2018 presentation, in the year of Nelson Mandela's Centenary, the idea is to present acts that have performed on the Rainbow stage post 2010. A then and now experience of the Rainbow soundtrack, if you will", says Comfort.

Kunene will be joined by master percussionist Mabi Thobejane, saxophone great, Mdu Magwaza and Swiss bassist Matthias Abaecherli. Who knows, one or two of them might end up in a free jam with The Brother Moves On to close the show? To find out that answer, be at the Rainbow Restaurant at 1pm sharp on Sunday 3 July. Due to the fact that we had already gone to press, the ticket price of R80 will remain the same.

Doors Open 1pm. Tickets are R80. The venue is The Rainbow, 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown
