Royal Natal Yacht Club's lawns - Saturday 6 and Friday 12 July

Date: 2013-07-04
The Royal Natal Yacht Club has issued two warnings where they will be firing off their century old cannon; the first will be on Saturday 6 July at 5.30pm for the opening of the Ola Lipton Challenge Cup ceremony where one shot will be fired and another single round on Friday 12 July at 8:00pm for the closing ceremony.

The public in the yacht basin vicinity and surrounding areas are advised that the sound will be incredibly loud, similar to a bomb going off. On both occasions, there will be only one shot fired and the club will be firing blanks, so no ships in the channel will be harmed.

The historic event, the century old Ola Lipton Challenge Cup has returned to Durban after a number of years and the crme-de-la-crme of South Africa's sailors will be duelling it out on the water for the 2013 title. As part of the pomp and ceremony, the as one of the oldest yacht club in the Southern Hemisphere and oldest in Africa will be opening the major sailing event in style with their naval treasure.

"Our delightful antique miniature cannon was last fired for the Queen's Jubilee last year; it has had a good polish and is rather looking forward to the occasion, as are all of us sailors. They will be rolled out onto the lawns and will be fired in honour of the occasion." stated a pleased Vice Commodore, John Banfield.
