Support the needs of people with little or no functional speech
Interface KZN is a non-profit organisation whose mission is to support adults and children who have little or no functional speech. We do this by providing training and opportunities to use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Our involvement extends to their families and caregivers. AAC refers to any method of communication that supplements speech where it is impaired.
Each week a team from Interface KZN sets out to the Valley of 1000 hills, they spend the day working with children from the Molweni, Embo and Kwa Ngcolosi communities. These children have a variety of disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual impairment and downs syndrome, but the challenge that they all share is limited or no functional speech. Whilst they face a great many difficulties, their inability to communicate is possibly their biggest barrier in life. At Interface KZN we believe that everybody deserves to have a voice, and we are very excited to be able to extend our services through this outreach project.
It has been a long process but collaboration with local organisations such as The Valley trust and Setani Centre have helped immensely with the positive growth and sustainability of this project. At this stage, we are working with over 30 children and we expect this number to continue to grow.
As a non-profit organisation, Interface KZN require funding to continue with our work.
