Student designs rock Vodacom Durban July

Date: 2013-06-07
Close on 100 student fashion designers converged on Greyville Racecourse for the preliminary judging of the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award brought to you by Canon to see i9f their designs would make the judges go "Posh? Oh My Gosh!"

That's the theme for this year?s Vodacom Durban July and true to form the kaleidoscope of entries reflected the depth of talent in the fashion design colleges, and their ability to push the creative envelope.

However, once they had reduced the entry to 30 semi-finalists the judging panel convened by fashion programme director Tiffany Prior breathed a sigh of relief because the majority of the entries were on trend, technically sound, and most importantly, clever interpretations of the theme "Posh? Oh My Gosh!"

"They got it!, thank goodness," said Greg Wallace, one of the judges. "The standard was very high, and for a generation that has not grown up with Ascot and Aintree, they got the theme," he said.

"It is also exciting to see fashion moving on, and it bides well for the future. No longer does the design have to be rooted in ethnicity, but it is original and fashion forward," he added.

Students from colleges around the province including the Durban university of technology, Creative Art, Priscilla Bhika School of Fashion, Eldonia School of Fashion, Lindiwe Khuzwayo School of Fashion, Jabu's Academy of fashion and the Pietermaritzburg School of Fashion presented entries from second and third year students.

The thirty semi-finalists will now go through to the next round and present their outfits at a glitzy show at Greyville Racecourse where ten finalists will be decided by a totally new panel of judges.

The 2013 Vodacom Durban July takes place at Greyville racecourse on Saturday 6 July 2013. More information can be found at https://www.vodacomdurbanjuly.co.za.
