Royal Natal Yacht Club Cancer Drive
Royal Natal Yachties have been busy for the past two seasons not only on the water but off the water too. We have approximately 12 races per season and we chose to ask each sailor for R20 per race or R240 for the season, this would be credited to their Yacht, and so a land race took place to see who the winner would be at the end of the season.
During the 2015/2016 racing season, from October to March, we started raising funds for the CANSA ASSOC as cancer has affected a number of members and friends. We then spoke with Nadia Booderan-Hall, who oversees the fund-raising events for the CANSA ASSOC. Their main points of reference being Educate, Support and Research. To this end, our sailors collected a wonderful R34108, which with our permission was used to test 200 ladies in the rural areas of KZN. Of those 200 ladies, three were found to have Breast cancer and one with Cervical cancer, so RNYC are proud that we could be of use and let our Community know that we care.
Boosted by last year's success, we again started collecting again, hosting a Shave-a-thon at the Club and also a Ladies Luncheon. The generosity of our members and their friends has been over-whelming and at this stage, before our luncheon we are sitting with approximately R50000 in the bank.
Viking Life-saving Equipment (Pty) Ltd has donated a Rescue Atlantic life jacket and a set of Category C Flares, both prizes valued at over R2000 each. We are selling tickets at R20.00, which will run until 22nd March when the proceeds of the raffle will be added to our donation, and will be able to hand over a lovely cheque to the CANSA ASSOC. The draw for the prizes will take place at Royal Natal Yacht Club on 29th April 2017.
