Celebrating the founder of MOAG - Meta Orton

Celebrating the founder of MOAG - Meta Orton

Date: 2013-10-25
The North Coast Artists are celebrating their 37th MOAG Awards Exhibition at La Lucia Mall from 25 October to 3rd November 2013. The MOAG is theirannual exhibition showcasing outstanding paintings selected from member's entries and was challenging this year for esteemed Judges Ingrid Lotter-Smith, Marion Townsend and Daryl Houghton.

The North Coast Artists Group are reaching out to the public not only to support their group by purchasing these outstanding paintings, but this gesture in turn will support the Animal Anti Cruelty League, the Group's charity for 2013.

Meta Orton was the driving force behind the formation of the North Coast Art Group, when after 10 years of living in London and travelling around the world, she returned to South Africa and settled in Umhlanga Rocks.

In 1966, she had written from London: I have all sorts of ideas for starting a painting studio for holiday visitors at a seaside resort near Durban.

Lib Steward, at the time concerned that the Group might disintegrate, organised a meeting in her home and suggested they form it into a properly constituted Group, complete with President, Secretary and Committee.

In January 1976 Meta was invited to its first General Meeting: "...We approved a Constitution item by item, and elected a Committee and Officers. I didn't stand, as I did not know where I was going to live; but I was happy over the development. It was rewarding to see somethingthat had grown in my Studio achieve a life and identity of its own." She later wrote.

Today the North Coast Artists Group (NCAG) has had its highs and lows, but with over a 100 members, it is clearly thriving and growing.

The MOAG Award Floating Trophy was presented to the North Coast Art Group by Meta, and to this day, it is the most sought after Trophy by all its members.

The Award for Drawing, and Award for Art in Alternative form followed soon after and the competition has remained very high.

The previous home for the North Coast Artists for more than 10 years was at the La Lucia Library but the Group had to move because of membership growth.

Their present home is The Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Glen Ashley where they still meet every second Saturday of the month. Their members are working hard and no doubt keeping up the good work Meta Orton started without hesitation, and at every presentation of her award to a very worthy member, a thought is always spared for Meta and her continuous encouragement.

There will be a lucky draw and the lucky winners can win themselves two nights at Thula Thula or a painting by Ian Van Zyl.
