Get Up And Go!

Get Up And Go!

Author: Tomas Yoko

The new Volkswagen up was to be my ride for the next few days and I was eagre to see how it fared with just 999 cubic centimetres of engine capacity.

I have to admit that as I slipped behind the steering wheel I was preparing myself to deal with a lack of power and accelleration, but boy was I in for a surprise.

The Volkswagen up has recently been given some upgrades and improvements, a new interior and exterior design, which I found appealing if not mesmerising. The interior was surprisingly spacious and the clever use of storage areas and drinks holders made it quite comfortable for me, and I am not a small person. The new Infotainment system was a delight to use and interface with.

Anyway we set out into the mountains, exploring the Midlands Meander and before I knew it I was having to take my foot off the accelerator, this spirited little up was boosting us uphill at an alarming speed, I could at this point admit to having gone over the speed limit but I'll save that for another day. Anyway the up continued to surprise me, the need for accelleration came sooner than I expected and when I asked a lot of the up, it gave me what I needed and sometime more.

For the informed amongst us, thei 999cc engine produces a respectable 55 kilowatts and 95 Newton metres. Fuel consumtion is an amazing 4,6 litres per hundred kilometres and top speed is reported to be 173 km/h. Some of the standard specification items were not expected like the Electronic Stability Control and ABS brakes and four airbags are also stsandard across the range.

The 251 litre boot space is big for its class and with the seats folded away you can load 959 litres of cargo into the up.

Take and up for a test drive, contact McCarthy Volkswagen Durban on 031 - 367 6767 or visit them at 40 Monty Naicker Street, Durban. You will be impressed.
