FOODIE: Jar it. Gift it. Munch it

FOODIE: Jar it. Gift it. Munch it

Date: 2016-12-16
With Christmas around the corner and our pursers almost stretched to the limit there truly is no greater gift then the gift of home made goodies.

Its inexpensive, its sweet and who doesn t need a condiment at the Christmas lunch table

I love making my own gifts for Christmas; I m not big on expensive, extravagant gadgets that are stuck in your cupboard and annually chucked out into the trash because they simply serve no purpose in your life. You know what I am talking about, as all of us have that space in our homes where the unwanted gifts gather dust.

There is something gratifying and magical about making Christmas gifts yourself. I have yet to meet anyone who does not love my pickle jars and they are so useful, especially at Christmas when so often we run out of everything. In that hour of need you can always whip out that special jar of homemade goodness and save the entire meal.

This is how easy it really is:

Tomato chutney

This is real quick and easy tomato chutney made from fresh market tomatoes. Just cut the tomatoes in half add a couple of onions, garlic and methi leaves...leave in the oven for three hours on 150 degrees Celsius. Then you can store it in the fridge for up to three weeks in a glass jar...perfect for curries, pastas and soups.

Who doesn t love chilli

Here is a recipe for Green chilli pickle or Hari mirch ka Achar (love the Indian pronunciation you can have so much fun when writing the label)

Thisˇhot and sour Chilli pickle recipe (hari mirch ka achar)ˇwill spice up any meal. It tastes the same asˇready-madeˇGreen Chilli pickleˇand has aˇlong shelf life. The pungent taste of mustardˇadds lovely flavour to this pickle. Make sure that you choose fresh firm chillies for this recipe

Ingredients required to make Green Chilli pickle / Hari mirch ka achar

* 250 gm. fresh long Green Chillies

* ´ cup lemon juice

* 3 teaspoons salt

* 2 tablespoons vinegar Wash fresh green chillies properly, wipe them with a clean dry cloth, remove the stalks of chillies.

* I cup of pickle masala

This is how I make my Hari mirch ka achar

Cut the chillies lengthwise in half.

Heat a little oil in a pan, when it becomes hot, add your pickle masala spices, then cool it down add the vinegar to chillies and then mix everything together.

Place in jars and decorate with coloured fabric on the lid

Happy pickling!
