Reaching new heights for Jade

Reaching new heights for Jade

Date: 2017-06-16

Excitement is growing as the plans for the Milestone 10th Annual Sunflower Jade Sky Hike are underway. The event is set to take place on Father's Day - Sunday, 18th June. The organising team behind the event, Ian and Mandy Tyrer of My Tutor Centre PMB assisted by the staff of The Sunflower Fund in Durban, are eagerly anticipating another memorable campaign.

The hike is held annually in memory of Jade Preston who passed away from leukaemia at the tender age of eight. The hike was initially held to raise funds in support of Jade's brave fight but it has since been held in her memory after she sadly succumbed to her illness. This commemorative walk aims to "celebrate life and to remember those who were challenged by cancer and to support those being challenged with cancer," says Mandy Tyrer.

The hike appeals to outdoor and hiking enthusiasts as well as families and individuals of all ages and fitness levels. All are welcome to join in the adventure and to hike at their own pace, as it is not a race but simply a beautiful day to be enjoyed in the outdoors with those closest to you. The hike commences from the Sani Pass border post at 8.00am and covers approximately eight kilometres up the mountain to the Highest Pub in Africa and down again.

The donation entry fee is a minimum of R100 per person and funds raised are in support of The Sunflower Fund who works toward growing the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) to give hope to patients diagnosed with life-threatening blood disorders, like leukaemia, who are in need of a blood stem cell transplant from a matching donor. Funds will also be raised for Justin Kyle who is currently battling leukaemia. Justin lives and farms in Wartburg with his wife and three young children.
