Loads of fun at the Fair

Loads of fun at the Fair

Date: 2012-11-07
Designer "Wellies" were the footwear of choice at this year's Christmas Fair at Collisheen Estate! Despite torrential rain, gale force winds and continuous power outages, the Fair went ahead with the customary flair and clockwork organisation which have become synonymous with the annual event.

Everything possible was done to make the shopping experience as pleasant as possible. A shuttle service was on hand to ferry guests from the parking areas to the fair, loads of wood shavings were carted in to help with the mud, a tractor was on hand to assist cars stuck next to the road and truckloads of gravel were brought in to make the road less slippery . the list goes on and on.

Many happy shoppers braved the elements and over R100 000 was raised for charity on the north coast. This was the 60th birthday of the Fair, which was first held in 1952 in the Stanger town hall. From that Fair, organised by Mrs Shirley Jex and a group of concerned farmers' wives in the Lower Tugela District, the charity organisation, the Christmas Fair Fund was born. Over the last 60 years, the Fund has been actively involved in bettering the lives of numerous people and communities on the north coast.

60 years as a fundraising organisation deserved a BIG cake. Doing the honours were past chairlady of the Christmas Fair Fund, Deids Rush and chairlady June Garner.

Christmas Fair Fund members enjoyed the beautiful birthday cake, made by Kerry Hedges of Lemon Canary Bespoke Baking. From left, Shelley Hedges, Michelle Blake, Kerry Hedges and Gaby Lyle.

The names of the winners of the raffle prizes were drawn by sponsor, Gillian Kaatze and Christmas Fair Fund member, Shirley Yates. Delena Trevisani from Hillcrest won the beautiful Christmas wreath donated by Gillian, Alice Nuba of Ballito won the Crabtree and Evelyn hamper, and Coleen Uys from Durban was the lucky winner of the original water colour by Maureen Dixon. The raffle raised over R10 000.
