IHS Durban adds to a chain reaction of kindness!

IHS Durban adds to a chain reaction of kindness!

Date: 2014-03-14
After being nominated for a "neknomination" by The International Hotel School's Cape Town Campus, the International Hotel School's Durban Campus took on the challenge on Tuesday, March 4th.

#NekNominationSA, also known as, #ChangeOneThing, is about doing a charitable act and then challenging others to do the same and continuing a chain reaction of kindness.

At lunch time on Tuesday, 28 students and 2 staff members travelled courtesy of Bophela Shuttle Services to drop off donated toys, clothes, maize meal and rice, colourful cupcakes baked by the culinary department (staff and students), and paper to 3 orphanages - all the items were either donated by the students at the campus, or bought from money raised by the Student Representative Council through cake sales, hot dog day, popcorn sales and civvies day.

The first stop on the day was Sithembakuye Children's Village in Botha's Hill which has been running since 2004 where 14 children of all ages, live under the supervision of house father, Russell Chili.

After offloading the goods from the shuttles, the IHS students played games with the children, sang songs and spoiled all with cupcakes before doing an official handover, which was coordinated by IHS Durban Principal, Genee' Griffiths.

Then it was off to destination number two, Sibusisiwe Children's Home in Inchanga which is home to 13 children of all ages, supervised by house mother, Theresa Gwala and three others.

On behalf of IHS, Genee Griffiths presented the toys, clothes, food and colourful cupcakes to the children and in appreciation of these gifts; a song was sung which had all clapping and singing along.

The final visit was to Khulani Children's Centre in Redhill, which also houses and cares for 13 children.

Well done to the Durban Campus on an awesome effort - seeing the happy smiles of all those children really touched our hearts and made it all worthwhile.
