Heels over Head spreads message of winners during Women's Month
Women's Month is, as always, a very special month for Durban based female band Heels over Head. To celebrate this year, they have planned a series of Free Concerts in Durban during the second week of August at The Playhouse Company, Rainbow Restaurant and The BAT Centre. With these performances, they want to send out the message that all women in music are winners.
Their message was inspired by a quote that a fan sent to them by Motown Records founder, Barry Gordy "A winner is a winner before he's become a winner".
From winning the Yamaha Young Talent Award in 2010 to independently releasing two music projects and being nominated for the SAMA Awards (2011) Best Contemporary Jazz Album early on in the career as a band. Heels Over Head has kept their footing firmly on the ground, with new compositions, local city performances on their own budget, touring within the S.A borders and the Southern African region, connecting and building a fan base.
"Where ever you go in the world the music industry is a men's world. There are female musicians and of course professionals, but if you simply look at the statistics, you don't need a calculator to tell you there are much more men than women. As a band we have been moving around in this men's world for almost 10 years now, over and over again we have to fight for our position; we have to fight for people to take us seriously. This is why this women's month we want to spread a message of motivation and encouragement: all women in music are winners to us!" says vocalist Thulile Zama.
The bands collective message for this Women's Month is: "Let's keep on encouraging females in this industry and fight the challenges together as men and women. Sisters, please keep on winning and you will make your family and community very proud."
You can catch them on Friday 11 August at The Playhouse Company, 29 Acutt Street, Durban at 5pm. Free Entrance. Saturday 12 August, at Rainbow Restaurant, 23 Stanfield Lane, Pinetown at 5pm. Free entrance. Sunday 13 August, at the BAT Centre, 45 Maritime Place, Durban at 3pm. Free entrance.
