The Riverside Sports Club in Durban was a buzz this Youth Day with approximately 750 children between six and 13 participating in its annual Spur Riverside Festival of Mini Hockey. The event, with 91 teams taking part, continues to be KZN's biggest mini hockey festival with 2014 being the best turnout to date. Well over half of the teams came from Durban North clubs, Riverside and Northwood Crusaders.

The festival has become a highlight in the club's as well as the local and regional community's calendar. Among the attendees were many provincial and former national players who helped coach Riverside teams on the day. The event which is run entirely by Riverside volunteers, kicked off at 9am when all the players came together to play their hearts out.

Building on Riverside Hockey Club's mantra of PURE HOCKEY ENJOYMENT, there are no winners at the festival. Natalie Cryer, Head of organising committee for Spur Riverside Festival said, "The festival is important to the local hockey community because it provides the kids with a pressure free way of expressing their hockey skills."

Another highlight of the day was the Kit for Kwa-Mashu Kids initiative, where supporters had been encouraged to bring and donate unused kit for the INK (Inanda, Ntuzuma and Kwa-Mashu) Hockey Club whose under 12 boys' side left for the World Junior Games, in Austria on Tuesday, June 17. When asked about the highlights of the day, Riverside Hockey Club's Chairman, Wayne Phillips, said, " We were thrilled with the turnout and it was a magical moment seeing the INK Club kids coming onto the field with shoes that were donated to them as part of the Kit for Kwa-Mashu Kids initiative. We sincerely thank everyone who supported the programme".

Riverside's Mini Hockey Programme ensures that children from as young as four can start developing their inner sports hero. For more information about the junior programme or Riverside Hockey Club in general, you can contact Riverside Hockey Club at: junior@riversidehockeyclub.co.za.
