Yet We Rise
Yet We Rise
Date: 2021-07-13
It has been a great challenge to stay focused on business, family or even the most mundane activity, while navigating through this global pandemic, the unrest and the effects thereof. These have certainly been disruptive times. Trying to help where we can with relief effort, keeping our ear to the ground in an attempt to stay ahead of the NEXT THING and still trying to keep life on track, has been somewhat overwhelming. Yet here we are, as a province we got through another week another absolute catastrophe.
Every force that tried to break us as a nation failed. The true South African spirit of Ubuntu came out fighting like a butterfly emerging from itÕs cocoon. Neighbours stood side by side protecting each other, sharing what they had with each other. Communities rallied support for areas negatively affected by the unrest. Ordinary citizens took to the streets, clearing away debris and helping the process of restoration. All these efforts at their personal expense.
The volunteers of Clean UP Durban, put their hands to the plough. Black, white, Indian, coloured everyone of them worked together, side by side, to get our city working. The likes of Food for Life Africa, Tamil Business Warriors, Rotary and so many other organisations mobilized relief in the form of food, baby supplies and hot nutritious meals. These were sorted, packed and distributed seamlessly with the help of every willing, available hand.
Seeing residents from out of KZN, mobilize support and relief, getting it to Durban at their own expense and sharing freely was beautiful. The Muslim community bringing in 32000 loaves of bread and milk and sharing it so generously with the hungry, was overwhelming. The risk that they took to drive this relief to Durban is so appreciated.
When we remember the unrest that was devised to divide us, remember how we rose. Out of the very ashes the humanity of our nation shone. Our resilience was shaken to its core but never destroyed. It was our humanity and goodness is that prevailed.
We are in for tougher times ahead, the true impact of these events will unfold in coming weeks and months. As we continue to support each other, like South Africa has over the last few weeks, we will get through this together.
We are a resilient nation, that has always risen despite the lamentable circumstances we face from time to time. We have experienced renewed togetherness, unity, a rainbow nation joining forces to pursue peace and justice in the face of adversity.
