F1 Report - Mark Webber

It was cats and dogs during practice and qualifying, and then in what has been the most exciting F1 series in a long time, the sun shone at Silverstone.

Fernando Alonso secured pole position proving his mettle in the wet, but it was to come down to tyre choices and pit timing to decide the winner once again.

Alonso looked like he was going to go from pole to flag holding off the fierce attacks of a hungry pack behind him. He managed to stay ahead until he stopped for his mandatory soft set of tyres as late as the 37th lap. Mark Webber found his advantage in his new set of hard tyres and whittled away at Alonso lead, finally overtaking with just a few laps to go.

Webbers team mate Sebastian Vettel was snapping at Alonso's heels as they crossed the finish line and secured the podium places. Felipe Massa brought his Ferrari home in fourth place right on Vettel's tail, with Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen applying pressure and claiming fifth place.

The race for championship status is now heating up and Fernando Alonso finds himself firmly in the lead for the driver's championship with 129 points. Mark Webber's win on Sunday brings him into second place at 116 points with his team mate Sebastian Vettel in third spot on 100. Lewis Hamilton trails with 92 points and Kimi Raikkonen follows with 83.

The constructor's championship sees Red Bull Racing surging ahead on 216 points followed by Ferrari on just 152. Lotus Renault lie third with 144 points, McLaren-Mercedes are close behind them on 142 and Mercedes in fifth position with 98.

The next race is the Formula 1 Grosser Preis Santander Von Deutschland, and will be held at Hockenheim in Germany on the 22nd.
