KwaDukuza Mayor vows to intensify campaign against crime

KwaDukuza Mayor vows to intensify campaign against crime

Date: 2013-05-09
Mthembu beefs up crime campaign

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu has appealed to law enforcers to step in to control the spiraling crime crisis amid his campaign targeting gender violence, Operation Khuzumhlola.

Mthembu on Tuesday vowed to campaign strongly against criminals in the wake of social security fears that Ward 10, Dube Village and Ten Acres residents have exposed.

Distressed residents have vented frustrations on the upsurge of gender violence as they are living in fear, women, children and the elderly being preyed upon. The spate of crime is linked to illicit drug substances like Whoonga.

Mthembu has decried the rampant violent attacks saying that they are unacceptable and law enforcers will step in to beef up security control.

'The spate of rape incidents has reached an unacceptably high level, with residents being forced to live in fear. These people are robbing off the lives of the innocent people, this is totally unacceptable. We will not waver in our actions, law enforcers will be closing in on criminals who randomly go on a crime spree', the Mayor was speaking at Dube Village, Ward 12 during the launch of his Khuzumhlola Campaign in that area.

"We will not only condemn these incidents but we will act decisively against perpetrators because they are the ones who cause unwarranted instability in our communities. We will prove that criminals don't have a place in our community, harsher sentences must be meted out against those who undermine the law," said Mthembu.

Mthembu will this month revisit Dube Village to demonstrate against transgressors, he will tag along law enforcement agencies. State Police and KwaDukuza Municipality's Crime Prevention Unit are expected to launch crackdown operations as part of campaigns intensified action against the scourge.

KwaDukuza has been rocked by rape incidents. Last week, three rape cases were reported at uMhlali Police Station. The KwaDukuza Department of Justice said ten cases associated with violence against women were concluded in March.

KwaZulu Natal Police arrested 347 suspects for sexual related offences as from the 5th to the 12th of April this year, a total of 60 offenders have been convicted and 19 life sentences have been handed down in various courts.

Following an upsurge of violent crimes against women, children and the elderly, Mthembu has since lanched a campaign against gender based violence named Operation Khuzumhlola in a bid to galvanise and build moral consciousness.
