Local Artist Shubnum Shaikh presents

Local Artist Shubnum Shaikh presents

Author: Kasia Yoko
Date: 2013-04-05
Shubnum Shaikh lives in Umhlanga with her family. She is a devoted mother to her four children and a caring wife to her very busy Chartered Accountant husband. Married for twenty-two years, Shabnum has lived a fortunate life taking care of her home and family.

" I have been truly blessed in life." Shubnum told The Bugle, "My children have turned out to be successful individuals with amazing life skills. I have sacrificed a career in fashion design to be with my family and it has paid off."

Shubnum was very content with her role as a mother but as her children started to get older she realised that she wanted more out of life. With the fashion industry in South Africa on a serious decline, Shubnum knew that going back to her old profession was not a good idea so she started to search for something to fulfil her creative spirit.

A few years ago, a painful set of events turned Shubnum to painting. "It was when my father died and I found myself in a deep dark place surrounded by the memories of my loving father that I started to paint." Said Shubnum, "My father was always supportive of everything I did, I missed him terribly. He was such an important part of my life and with his death a voice inside me said, 'Paint' and so I started painting."

Shubnum could not believe how easy it was to create perfect images on canvas. She has never had any formal art training but everyone who saw her painting was amazed at her raw talent.

As soon as she realised that painting was her real calling, Shubnum joined the North Coast Art Group, where she met other aspiring artists like herself. She was inspired by the talent around her and the encouragement she received from fellow artists, it was not long before she held her first exhibition.

"I remember selling my first painting." Shubnum told The Bugle, "A couple saw it and the husband fell in love with it. The very next day the wife arrived and bought it for her husband for their 10th wedding anniversary."

Painting came easy to Shubnum but it has been a journey that would take her to various corners of the country attending workshops, exhibitions and art projects. This year Shubnum is concentrating on marketing and selling her vast collection of art pieces and believes her art would beautify any corner of the house, office or studio.
