Ashton College Sisters preparing for Hockey Tournament finals

Date: 2013-07-12
Ten enthralling regional tournaments across KwaZulu-Natal have concluded with a team from each area advancing through to the finals of the SPAR aQuelle School Girls Hockey Tournament that will take place on July 20 and 21 at St Mary's DSG and Thomas More College in Kloof.

The tournament which is currently in its third year has fast become a popular fixture on the school sporting calendar.

Newcomers to the finals Ashton College will represent the Durban North Region along with Wartburg Kirchdorf School holding the Greytown flag.

Making their second appearance at the finals is St Anne's (Pietermaritzburg North)who were the overall tournament winners in the inaugural year and are hoping to make a surge to regain their title again this year They are joined by Creston College (Port Shepstone), Durban Girls' High (Durban South) and Empangeni High School.

MD for SPAR KZN, Rob Philipson commented, "The impressive quality of skills displayed at the finals is always exciting to watch. The tournament bodes well for the future of South African women's hockey, with top players from around the province being given the opportunity to be recognised and their talents showcased in tournaments such as this one."

As much as the tournament is all about the action on the pitch, the unsung heroes, the umpires are an integral part of the games. Throughout the tournament an umpire was honoured in each region being presented with the title of Most Promising Umpire. They have been invited to officiate at the finals, in so doing gaining more experience under the watchful eye of KZN selectors.
