Mandela Day Blood and Stem Cell Donor Drive

Mandela Day Blood and Stem Cell Donor Drive

Date: 2016-07-29
To encourage people to do 67 minutes of community service for Mandela Day, the Durban North Blood Donor Centre held a special blood drive on 18 July in association with Mum's Mail, The A-List, Tate, Nolan & Knight Attorneys and Chateau Gateaux. The Sunflower Fund was also in attendance and recruited 67 new stem cell donors for inclusion on The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR). A huge thank you to Life Healthcare, who sponsored the full R2000 per donor, thus sponsoring an amazing R134000 to register the 67 new donors.

The Sunflower Fund's mission is to educate, register and fund the medical costs of individuals wishing to join the national Registry. The enrolment process is simple and it takes just two test tubes of blood to register as a stem cell donor. In order to ensure that cost is not a limiting factor for a prospective donor, The Sunflower Fund bears the costs of the initial test. It is greatly appreciated when a contribution is made as with Life Healthcare, which then allows the organisation to recruit more donors.

Every blood donor received a special promotional SANBS gift, and the first 67 donors also received fudge donated by Tate, Nolan and Knight as well as a cappuccino voucher from Chateau Gateaux. All 67 stem cell donors who registered, were spoilt with a voucher for a 24cm cake sponsored by Chateau Gateaux.

An amazing 160 units of blood were collected on the day. A further 20 donors were unable to donate blood, due to low iron levels (and other medical reasons). A massive thank you to all who made the effort to donate blood to save lives - every drop counts! Three lives can be saved from one unit of blood, so potentially 480 patients benefitted from this drive.
