Helping Hand creates hope in Durban North

Helping Hand creates hope in Durban North

Date: 2014-10-17
With poverty and unemployment on the increase nationally, Solidarity Helping Hand has now intervened in Durban North as well by establishing a local branch. This branch, with Zelda Rheeders as chairperson, forms part of Helping Hand's more than 110 branches countrywide.

"We want to bring hope and relief to the needy in our community," Rheeders said. "To give a child hope, to help a youngster to study, or to create a job for an unemployed person - that is what is important to us." She said that the branch consisted of a team of women prepared and ready to extend a hand to encourage and empower others. "We have already started off by upliftment projects in our local community and we are currently working among the children and families in a local informal settlement," she said.

"In October, as part of celebrating the Month of the Elderly, we plan to reach out to needy old-age homes. Our branch is also involved in Helping Hand's national Schoolbag Project whereby school bags with the necessary stationary items are distributed to needy grade ones on their first day of school." Helping Hand runs various national projects aimed at alleviating, preventing and ending poverty, from babies to elderly people. In addition, every branch also launches local projects based on the needs identified in that community.

"Helping Hand is not an organisation that is forever distributing food and clothes," Rheeders said. "We want to uplift individuals and families and empower them to improve their own circumstances. We do not want to create a culture of dependency; we want to assist people who want to ensure a better future for themselves."
