ATHOLTON PRIMARY SCHOOL TAKES TO THE WATER

ATHOLTON PRIMARY SCHOOL TAKES TO THE WATER

Date: 2014-08-08
For years Atholton Primary has encouraged kids from a very young age to learn to surf and take part in surfing competitions. The annual inter-house school surfing contest was recently held at Marine Beach (Durban)in contestable yet choppy conditions with 1-2 ft waves and slight NE winds.

Paul Van de Wall who used to own and run Aloha Surf Shop in Umhlanga was very instrumental in starting these school surfing events. His oldest son Rein and daughter in law Gina have now taken over and Paul gets to watch his own grandchildren taking part.

Kids from Grade 0 to Grade 7 took part and put on a fine performance showing future talent. In the Grade 0 division Indie Van de Wall stole the show and placed 1st with Brode Herbst runner up and Finley Buttery third.

The boys division was won by Kyle Hultzer, who narrowly defeated Jamie Sindt. Third placed was Reece Ciaglia. Gabi Lailvaux was outstanding in the girls division and took top spot, followed by Ella Potterton, Layyah Varachia and Dominque Ferrers.

Ella Potterton won the award for the 'Surfer with Most Potential' and was rewarded with prizes from Hurricane Surf who sponsored the event.

Gina Van De Wall was delighted with the turn out "It is just so good to see so many little ones taking part and loving the ocean. Thank you to all the teachers and parents who got involved. Special thanks also to Hurricane Surf for their generous prizes. Such a fun day was had by all".
