Driving The Polo

Driving The Polo

If there is one car on the market that has taken this country by storm it would have to be the Volkswagen Polo. I recently drove the latest addition to the range of Polo models available from McCarthy Volkswagen Umhlanga, the 1.0 TSI BlueMotion, the first Volkswagen BlueMotion with a TSI engine.

I was more than impressed with the performance, especially the way that the petrol gauge seemed to never move. I drove and I drove and I drove and the needle just sat there, as if it were laughing at me. More like laughing with me because the cost of petrol these days made me think that this was definitely the Polo to buy.

Then my mind turned to the road test I had done on the new Polo GTI and I was flummoxed. I remembered the thrilling acceleration and when I compared the fuel consumption figures of the GTI's 5.6 litres per hundred kilometres to the Polo 1.0 TSI BlueMotion's 4.2 litres per hundred kilometres, I cursed being a Libran and not having sharp decisive abilities.

The Polo GTI zooted from zero to a hundred in a flash 6.7 seconds and I was once again presented with a variable that made my decision that much harder. The 1.0 litre was right behind the GTI at 10.5 seconds and the amazing torque, available at extremely low revs gave the 1.0 litre such gutsy performance attributes the GTI was slowly fading.

Luckily for me, and you, there are a number of variants in the Polo range, from the 1.0 litre TSI to the 1.2 litre TSI, the 1.4 TDI available in a 55kW and a 77kW version. Polo is one of the world's best-selling compact model cars having sold over fourteen million units worldwide, so you know that either way you are making a good decision.

For more information on the Polo range and to find out which one suits your needs the best, contact McCarthy Volkswagen Umhlanga on 031 566 9700 or visit their showroom at 6 - 8 Sunset Crescent, Umhlanga Ridge.
