North Coast Artists presents a morning of creative inspiration with Karla Nixon and Dr. Alexander Coutts

North Coast Artists presents a morning of creative inspiration with Karla Nixon and Dr. Alexander Coutts

Date: 2016-10-07
Karla Nixon will be guests at the up and coming event taking place on Saturday morning 8 October from 9am to 12 noon.

Karla who is a Durban based artist who predominantly works with paper will be demonstrating the art of paper sculpting, "I hand cut and sculpt intricate, images drawn from my surrounding environments. I completed my degree in Fine Art at the DUT, SA. My degree focused on paper cutting as a contemporary art form, which I completed with Cum Laude. During my studies I received a number of awards and have participated in a number of group shows in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town." Said Karla.

"The day I found paper as a medium, not just as a substrate, was the day I found home. I hadn't really been searching for a medium, I was on the road to becoming a painter, but you could say paper found me. There is something so magical about this very humble material, so incredibly transformative. The limits seemed endless for me, and I haven't looked back since." Karla concluded.

Dr. Alex Coutts will give a short talk and presentation, which comprises an African safari with David Shepherd, a famous British painter of wildlife.

Alex was a teacher at Northlands Boys High School (now known as Northwood) in Durban, and served as Deputy Rector of Edgewood College of Education, where he also headed the Department of Art in an administrative capacity. He has Doctorate in Education (UNISA) and is a Doctor of Philosophy from Natal University.

He is the author of seventeen books. Alex chaired the KZNTA Research Committee for ten years and helped establish the KZNTA library. He chaired the Adjudication Committee for Tourist Guides that won the Service Excellence Award for Guides Training in 2005. He also co-wrote the motivation that won for South Africa the United Nations Ulysses award in 2007.

For those who love arts and crafts it's a morning not to be missed. Besides the art demo it's also a great platform to meet the demonstrators and greet fellow art and craft enthusiasts over a cuppa and some delicious snacks.

The venue for this fun and educational morning will take place in the church hall, 2 Newport Avenue, Virginia (entrance just after Danville High School). An entrance fee of R40 includes refreshments. For more information see Facebook - North Coast Artists.
