Youth it's time to let us read your thoughts and ideas

Youth it's time to let us read your thoughts and ideas

Date: 2019-02-15

The time has arrived; youth of South Africa lift your pens and let's hear your thoughts and views on Social Cohesion and the nation building project in South Africa. The Chicago 125 conference committee on Friday (08/02/2019) launched the first national essay writing competition of its kind in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture KZN, the Billy Nair Education Desk and The Sri Sarada Devi Ashram of Asherville Durban. South Africans are encouraged to log into https://www.chicago125.org to register for the conference and gather more information for the essay competition.

11th September 2018 marked the 125th anniversary of the Chicago addresses presented by Swami Vivekananda at the parliament of World Religions in Chicago 1893. Through the messages delivered By Swami Vivekananda at the World Parliament of Religions many came to see and understand that the Hindu Dharma is not constricted, narrow, restrictive and directed to any race, gender or nation.

Speaking at the launch of the conference MEC Ravi Pillay applauded the initiative on behalf of the KZN government and lent its full support for the conference and essay writing competition which advanced and complemented the social cohesion programs of government.

Heading the essay writing project Dr RT Govender from the department of Arts and Culture in KZN was optimistic of the thoughts and ideas that would emanate from this project in keeping with the department's mandate to promote social cohesion and moral regeneration. His department will bind the winning essays into a book and make them available at libraries throughout our province.

In keeping with the theme of our conference of continuing the dialogue we want to invite, welcome and encourage our primary and secondary school scholars of South Africa to read, research and write their perspectives of how they perceive South Africa going forward through the lens of the evergreen Chicago addresses that speak to brotherhood of humanity, peace, tolerance and universal acceptance commented Mr Henry Reddy, chair of the organizing committee. How can this message of Swami Vivekananda help mitigate our current challenges of global conflict, trade wars, climate change, poverty, underdevelopment and discrimination along racial, ethnic, gender and religious lines concluded Reddy

The grand ideas and effort that emanate from the scholars will be rewarded with valuable incentives and schools with the most entries also benefitting with a cash prize of R5000. The winners in each category will walk away with laptops and the runners up will receive tablets

The organization committee also acknowledges the support of the local and metropolitan municipalities who have arranged special exhibitions at libraries in the province where students who require information and resource material on Swami Vivekananda will be able to access them through selected literature. Most libraries have internet facilities to enable learners to upload their essays for evaluation.

All information pertaining to the conference and essay competition can be found on the website https://www.chicago125.org. Should you require any information further than that you can call Henry Reddy on 082 485 9342.
