MOAG Art Exhibition 40th Anniversary

MOAG Art Exhibition 40th Anniversary

Date: 2016-10-21
Meta Orton, Umhlanga Rocks artist and teacher, was the inspiration behind the formation of the North Coast Art Group in 1976.

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the formation of the North Coast Artists. The annual MOAG (Meta Orton Art Group) juried art exhibition, held this year at La Lucia Mall from 28 Oct - 6 Nov is named afterMeta Orton (1912 - 2001).

Meta started a sketching club in a studio at her home in 1967 and moved to Namibia in 1975. Determined not to lose the interaction among the artists in the area, her friend, Lib Stewart, properly constituted the group and the first AGM and exhibition were held in 1976. Meta Orton attended the first meeting of the group and wrote, "I was happy to see something that had grown in my studio achieve a life and identity of its own."

On Saturday 15 Oct a panel of judges were asked to adjudicate and evaluate over a hundred artworks from North Coast Artists members for this prestigious exhibition. The artworks were presented to the judges anonymously, with the artists name covered by a number. This year North Coast Artists panel of judges were renowned artists and art lovers, Ingrid Lotter Smith from Durban North, Marion Townshend from Inchanga and Christina Godfrey from La Lucia.

The MOAG trophy will be awarded to the artist who has produced the best work submitted for this exhibition, irrespective of category. This will take place at the opening of the exhibition at La Lucia Mall on the 28 October at 6:30pm.

Commission on all sales of art from the exhibition will be donated to the Animal Anti-Cruelty League. There will also be a prize for a raffle, donated by the Beverly Hills, of which all sales will also go towards the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.
