Ashton Debutantes And Squires Raise R73 000 For Charity
"This year we allowed the students to use their own innovative ideas and their own initiative in the fundraising efforts, and every Debutante and Squire is congratulated on the way they embraced the programme," said Mr Joe Erasmus, Executive Head. "Each of these efforts will make a difference in the lives of the people in our community."
At the function, these young Ashton ambassadors were recognised for their achievements in raising a phenomenal amount of R73 000 for charities identified by the Debutantes and Squires. Proud family members, friends, the Management and Staff of Ashton International were there to witness the recognition of these youngsters and announcement of the winners.
Community Service, sponsorships, and funds raised, are converted into points to determine the overall winner. This year it was Form 4 student, Ashleigh Werner who was announced winning debutante, with Savannah Shone in second place, and Megan Bates clinched third spot. Ashleigh also ran with a text book drive, and thousands of text books and reading books will be distributed. The nominated charities who were present on Friday and presented with their cheques were St Lukes' Home of Healing (R5000); Tuinsig Old Aged Home (R10000); NOAH (R5000); Greytown Childrens' Home (R10000); Smile (R5000); LIV (R8000); North Coast Courier Orphan Fund (R10000);
St Lukes' Home of healing in Kearsney, is a unique haven of peace for the mentally and handicapped on the North Coast, and Tuinsig Old Aged Home cares for the elderly and frail. Both these institutions have held a special place in the hearts of the Ashton Debutantes and Squires, as they receive limited funding from the Government, and rely on sponsorships and donations to run the facilities adequately. Greytown Childrens' Home is a safe haven for children who have been separated from their families due to abuse, divorce, children who have been abandoned and various other reasons. The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund have a variety of orphanages they assist, and we trust that this will help make a different to these organisations. This year SMILE and LIV were added to our lists. The funds for LIV will be used to purchase stationary and will be handed over to the students.
"Ashton continues to strive to instil in our children one of life's richest skills, that of giving and helping our community and those in need," said a proud Mr Erasmus, Executive Head of Ashton.
