Call Centre Launched To Promote Responsible Trading

Call Centre Launched To Promote Responsible Trading

Date: 2013-10-25
South Africa's first liquor licensing call centre was officially opened this week.

The call centre seeks to assist many retail liquor traders who are currently unaware of the new requirements of The Liquor Licensing Act 6 of 2010 and how these will affect their licenses. Present at the launch were MEC for Economic Development and Tourism Michael Mabuyakhulu MPP and SAB Executive Director for Transformation and Corporate Affairs, Dr Vincent Maphai.

The dedicated call centre line, 087232 2333, will be staffed by four full-time KZNLA employees. They will respond to traders' enquiries and provide an advisory service to customers on the licence application process, status of licences, licence renewals, complaints about outlets in the community, what to do when a business has been raided, any other matters relating to licensing and the new KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Act. The call centre has been structured to handle calls and walk-in customers and staff have been trained to handle both functions.

"We look forward to building safer communities in partnership with the liquor industry, for the good of the people of KwaZulu-Natal and the growth of our economy," said Mabuyakhulu. "This call centre is integral to this strategy, and is already assisting traders with their licensing queries."

"KZNLA recognises that a new approach to liquor regulation must be ambitious but also extremely sensitive," said Stella Khumalo, KZNLA's CEO. "It must seek to combine competing interests and serve the overall public good, not only for those who produce, distribute and sell liquor, but also for those who consume it, as much as for those who don't but are inevitably affected by it in some way, either through its economic benefits or negative effects of its abuse."

Through the call centre, KZNLA aims to aid a smooth transition of licences to comply with the new Act and simultaneously promote and facilitate compliance and responsible trading in the industry.
