Verulam Kalay Khazhagam

Verulam Kalay Khazhagam

Date: 2012-10-25
The Khazhagam had its informal beginnings in 1984. A group met regularly to receive training in the performance of musical (both vocal and instrumental) and dance items at the regional and provincial eisteddfods. Some of the members of this group, who had no affiliations to other organizations at the time, expressed the need for an organization to propagate the arts.

In 1987 the Verulam Kalay Khazhagam (VKK) was constituted. With headquarters at Oaklands Temple, four branches were established at Mountview, Lotusville, Dawncrest and a Youth Branch for the whole organization. The founder and first chairperson who served in this capacity for 15 years, was Mrs Saro Moodley. For the last 6 years Mrs Saroj Govender has been serving as the Chairperson of VKK.

Later that year, the first secretary of VKK, Ronnie Moodley, published Namasivaaya Maalay Booklet and book of devotional songs. The books together with audiocassettes recorded by members led by Saro Moodley, were distributed in South Africa as well as to other parts of the world.

In 1993 Krishnee Lutchmanan was elected as the first adult chairperson and Gonasegari Veerasamy as the first youth chairperson. The chief source of information for religious discourses is the book "One World One God" by Prof K G Moodley. The book has questions and answers on 38 topics written in simple English. Devi Gounden, an ex-chairperson of the Mount Haven Branch, relocated to New Zealand in 1998. She started a prayer group there and used the knowledge and experience gained in VKK to run it.

Projects undertaken by our Youth Club include 50 Christmas hampers for children at the Osindisweni Hospital, in 2010 they presented a play entitled 'Bululu Uncle' to raise funds for school uniforms. They also collected school bag hamper containing a set of school uniforms and stationary donated to 50 disadvantage learners to the following schools: Trenance Park Primary, Verulam 2010, Acacia Primary, Verulam 2011, Mounthaven Primary, Verulam 2012.
